Community Impact
The population we serve is comprised of men who suffer from chronic alcohol and drug addictions. Some of our participants have spent years on the streets, homeless and jobless. Many of these men may suffer from mental disorders. As a result of our recovery support program, there are fewer homeless men on the streets of Nashville. Also, there is a decrease in crime within metropolitan Nashville, because programs, like WHM, exist. According to Access to Recovery (ATR) statistics, which were compiled by the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services, “89% of those involved with law enforcement at the beginning of ATR services had no further criminal justice involvement while receiving ATR services.”
Helping Men Reintegrate Into Their Community
WHM participated as an ATR provider in Middle Tennessee to offer supportive ATR services for our program participants. Additionally, as participants advance through our program, they move back into the workforce, and contribute to the community by paying taxes, volunteering, and educating others about the disease of addiction. In fact, “51% of unemployed service recipients obtained paid employment after ATR.”
As our participants successfully recover, even though the process of recovery is often fraught with relapse, they inspire others who suffer from the same condition; according to ATR statistics, “82% of ATR service recipients repaired their social connections to friends and families” — a very positive impact on our community. (WHM received recognition from the TDMHDD as an ATR service provider in Middle Tennessee).
